Choosing the right upholstery fabric

When customization is unlimited, the hardest question becomes fabric. This is how we walk buyers through it at the factory, without the textile jargon.

Boucle: the soft sculptural look

Looped, woolly, warm. Boucle photographs beautifully on curved pieces and hides seams well. It reads casual-luxury and forgiving in the hand. Choose tighter loops for commercial use; loose loops are for homes without cats.

Velvet: depth and drama

No fabric holds color like velvet; the pile gives every shade two tones as light moves. Modern polyester velvets are far tougher than their reputation and clean well. The classic choice for beds, statement chairs and hotel lobbies.

Leather: the long game

Leather costs more up front and outlives everything else, growing character where fabric grows tired. Full-grain shows natural markings; corrected grain looks uniform. For heavy daily use, restaurants and offices, leather is usually the economical choice over years.

Linen blends: quiet and airy

The relaxed, natural look for warm climates and calm interiors. Pure linen wrinkles as a lifestyle; blends keep the look with better behavior.

Performance fabrics: for real life

Stain-resistant weaves made for children, pets and commercial projects. Today's versions feel like ordinary premium fabric. If a sofa will live hard, say so; a factory can propose performance options in almost any look you want.

How to decide quickly

Tell the factory three things: who will use the piece, how hard, and the look you are after. From tens of thousands of options through partner mills, the honest shortlist is usually five swatches long, and swatches can be photographed or shipped to you before you decide. Material choice should always be a step you personally approve.
